This relatively long and narrow garden occupies the space between the house, studio and garage. A timber batten screen conceals the garage and resolves an awkward junction between the studio and garage rooflines. The batten detail is also used on the boundary fence and includes an inward curving section to enable street side planting. A black Shadowclad screen on the opposite fence line provides a backdrop to the neighbour’s purple Gleditsia which is treated as a feature. Dead space behind the studio accommodates a basketball court and 3-hole putting green; this area is also used as an outdoor cinema. The planting scheme is loosely inspired by native grasslands and is dominated by grasses, sedges and rushes with herbaceous plants added to attract pollinators and provide seasonal colour. Plants are laid out randomly for a naturalistic, wild-ish feel; most are native; all tolerate both wet and dry soil.
